English Language Arts 6-12
 Goals, focus

Schools in Buncombe County and the State of North Carolina are preparing to implement The North Carolina State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects (“the Standards”) in the 2012-2013 school year. The goal of these new standards is to ensure that all students are college and career ready in literacy no later than the end of high school.

Students who are College and Career Ready in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language will demonstrate independence; build strong content knowledge; respond to the varying demands of audience, task, purpose, and discipline; comprehend as well as critique; value evidence; use technology and digital media strategically and capably; and come to understand other perspectives and cultures.

The purpose of the current standards is to teach students how to communicate effectively as individuals and as contributing members of society. The present North Carolina Standard Course of Study for English Language Arts can be found at The North Carolina State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects can be found at: http://www.ncpublicschools.org/curriculum/languagearts/
