Week in Review



At this year's Countdown to Kindergarten, future students and their parents had the chance to meet the teachers and principals from their local elementary schools! The fun gathering at the Asheville Outlets featured plenty of hands-on activities to help kids get a feel for the creative projects they have in store, as well as lots of useful information for moms and dads!  Photos and more details are also available at BuncombeSchools.org!

The Williams-Baldwin Teacher Campus
Learn all about the up and coming Williams-Baldwin Teacher Campus- scheduled to open this Spring of 2017! The unique project aims to provide affordable, comfortable, and practical housing for teachers in Buncombe County.

Owen High Plans to Raise Banner for Girls Athletics
At the end of the month, Charles D. Owen High School plans to unveil a new banner in the gymnasium to honor a former Warlassies team with a staggering run of 90 consecutive wins. This all happened during a time when state championships didn't exist for girls. It's time to set the record straight!

Cane Creek's Courthouse Champs
The varsity Mock Trial team at Cane Creek Middle has done it again! For the third consecutive year, the team was named regional champions when they topped the event held in the Haywood County Courthouse. The win qualifies the Hurricanes to compete in Raleigh for the NC State Mock Trial Finals on December 10.

7 Habits Author Addresses Asheville
Sean Covey, the well-known author of 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, spoke to a full house at the Crowne Plaza Resort Asheville this week as part of an effort to spread the word about The Leader in Me, an innovative program focused on leadership and life skills for students that several #BCS schools have implemented. Mr. Covey also paid a special visit to the students at Weaverville Elementary!

Fortifying our Fire Fighters
While WNC experiences concerning wildfires across the region, BCS students are stepping up to encourage and support our fire and emergency workers who tirelessly work around the clock to protect our homes and businesses. This week, students from Black Mountain Elementary have been collecting much-needed supplies from their community!

Nesbitt/Blackhawks Volleyball Star
Caitlin Griffin of the Nesbitt Discovery Academy plays volleyball for North Buncombe High and topped the MAC in aces this fall! According to the Citizen-Times, she "finished her sophomore season with 642 assists and now has 1,389 for her career. The young setter's assists total and number of aces (66) this fall were the most in the Mountain Athletic Conference..."
