Meet our Behavior Outreach Staff!

Marlou DeVera
Marlou DeVera

Marlou de Vera is an autism specialist serving Buncombe County schools.

Prior to being an autism specialist, Marlou was an exceptional children’s curriculum specialist for the elementary schools in the Reynolds district.  She also worked as a middle school intensive intervention teacher for students with autism for Henderson County public schools and Program Director for their mainstreaming program for students with high functioning autism at Veritas Christian Academy K-12.

Marlou received certification as a TEACCH certified professional Practitioner through the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.   She has a master’s degree in Education (Curriculum and Instruction) from the University of the Philippines. 

Marlou has a passion for constantly improving the educational experience of her students as they reach their potential in school and be the best they can become. 


Beth Fields
Beth Fields

Beth Fields is an Autism Specialist serving Buncombe County Schools.

Prior to working in this capacity, Beth worked as an intensive intervention and resource teacher in the Elementary School and Middle School settings.  While earning her teaching certification, Beth worked as a Group Home Manager in Chapel Hill, NC.  She received a BA in Recreation Administration and a Master’s Degree in Special Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Beth worked closely with Division TEACCH in Chapel Hill and developed a passion for working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families.

Beth enjoys supporting classroom teachers and appreciates the challenges they face as educators.

Patti Garrott
Patti Garrott

Patti Garrott is a Behavior and Autism Specialist for Buncombe County Schools. 

Prior to working as a Behavior Specialist, Patti worked as a Resource teacher and Intensive Intervention teacher for Buncombe County Schools, at the elementary level. She received her undergraduate degree at Western Michigan University and at Murray State University, in Kentucky, in the areas of Learning and Behavioral Disorders.  Patti received her Master’s at the University of Northern Colorado, in the area of Affective Education.  Currently she is certified as a Crisis Prevention Intervention instructor for the Buncombe County Schools. 

She sees her role as a Behavior Specialist to support the needs of students, schools and families. Patti has a passion for working with student in all capacities.


Brian Powchak

Brian Powchak

Brian Powchak is a Behavior Specialist with the Buncombe County Schools Behavior Outreach Team. 

 Brian has been in education for over 15 years and specializes in strategies for high school students, delinquency, Positive Behavior Interventions, and alternative education.  Brian began his career as an Eckerd Youth Alternatives Wilderness Counselor and was a teacher for students with behavior disabilities at the middle school level.

Brian thrives when collaborating with teams, helping brainstorm and develop schoolwide strategies, advancing climate and culture initiatives, and working to better relationships between students, staff, and administration.

Buncombe County Schools is in the process of reviewing its website to ensure compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
