Senior Walk: Owen District (Video)
On May 18, 2017, the graduating seniors of Charles D. Owen High School proudly walked the halls of their former schools, congratulated and cheered on by younger students eager to one day fill their shoes. The seniors visited Black Mountain Primary School, Black Mountain Elementary, W.D. Williams Elementary, and Charles D. Owen Middle School. Announcing Our 2018 Teachers of the Year
Each of our schools has officially announced their next Teacher of the Year! Our 2018 Teachers of the Year were celebrated during a special reception held at the Martin L. Nesbitt, Jr. Discovery Academy on Tuesday. Congratulations to these incredible teachers who were chosen by their peers! District Teachers of the Year and the overall Buncombe County Teacher of the Year will be determined this fall.

Leading for Reading
Lylah Goforth is showing what it means to be a leader at her school, and she even gained the support of nearby celebrity Dolly Parton. The Weaverville Elementary School second-grader had shelves full of books that she no longer needed at her home. So she and her older sister decided to give them to other students and kick off a book drive.

A Perfect Prom for PEP
On May 12, students with the Progressive Education Program (PEP) held a fantastic, Disney-themed prom, hosted by Biltmore Church! See the photos to see how PEP staff, Biltmore Church, Party Blvd., and students from T.C. Roberson High came together to make this a night to remember!

Erwin's Athlete of the Year
C.J. Thompson of Clyde A. Erwin High School was celebrated as the 2017 Male Athlete of the Year by the Mountain Amateur Athletic Club. The 850-person event was held at The Omni Grove Park Inn.

Dance, Beats, & Splashes for OCS
Dance beats and splashes reverberated across Lake Eden on Wednesday as students in Buncombe County Schools’ Occupational Course of Study (OCS) program enjoyed a well-earned celebration ahead of Graduation Day. OCS offers an alternative pathway for students with special needs to receive a high school diploma and get ready for success in their chosen careers.

Emma Elementary Celebrates Diversity
Emma Elementary School families come from 16 different countries, and that’s something to celebrate. The school’s fourth annual Culture Day on Friday featured presentations about those different countries – from Russia to Colombia.

Erwin and Roberson Shine at State Track Meet
At last weekend's state track meet, the ladies' 4x100-meter relay team from Erwin High (consisting of Shakayla Allen-Morgan, Victoria Borum, Sha'Jaia Grant and Jalyn Stevens) took home the 3A state title with a time of 48.32 seconds. At the same meet, T.C. Roberson's Michelle Cobb won the triple jump. See the full meet results here.

W.D. Williams' Mother's Day Festival
As reported today by "The Spanish-Language Newspaper" La Noticia, W.D. Williams Elementary's recent Mother's Day Festival was a great success! In Mexico, the Mother's Day Festival is held on May 10. Here in Buncombe County, students led the charge with poems, songs, and special presentations to celebrate their loved family members. Read the article below (translation included).
