The BCS Week in Review
Every day, BCS students learn through exploration, engage the community, and prepare for tomorrow. Our Week in Review brings you these stories of educational achievement and success in Buncombe County Schools. This week was full was important stories, and this week's Post of the Week will feature two stories that created a lot of buzz of social media! #WeAreBCS and proud.

BCS a Leader in Teacher Qualifications
BCS employs 563 National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs), the fourth highest number among school districts in the state and 17th highest number nationwide, according to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.



Emma Elementary's 'Boys 2 Men' Club
BCS teachers and administrators go beyond academics to teach the whole child. Their tireless work ensures that our students are prepared for the future. To that end, Emma Elementary School Principal Jeremy Stowe started a “Boys 2 Men” club last year. The club is his chance to mentor the boys at his school and share valuable life skills.

Across our state and nation, Buncombe County Schools is recognized as a leader in providing social and emotional supports for students. The Compassionate Schools model demonstrates a framework for understanding the connection between behavior, brain-based research, and academics. Buncombe Schools' Nutrition a National Success
Forty-two cafeteria managers and principals were honored at the Board of Education meeting for winning awards of excellence from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Only 91 such school awards were given nationwide this year! Our schools earned bronze, silver, gold, and gold awards of distinction for the nutrition program.

Cane Creek Mock Trial Second in State
Cane Creek Middle School students know how to argue their case. 50 teams and 750 students converged at the Durham County Courthouse on Dec. 16 for the 7th Annual Iredell Middle School Mock Trial Tournament sponsored by the North Carolina Bar Foundation. The students from Cane Creek Middle were eager and prepared to bring their best after recently winning the Western Regional Middle School Mock Trial Championship.

STEM School Seniors Shine
There’s only one place in Asheville to see a talking mechanical barn owl, organic irrigation systems, mixed martial arts, and a fresh analysis of Amelia Earhart’s historical flight. Senior Project night in all BCS high schools is a time when students come together to provide innovative solutions for today’s world, conclusions of in-depth research, or new takes on classic questions, as they prepare for life after graduation.
