Clyde A. Erwin Middle School Intensive Intervention students got a tasty lesson in etiquette on Thursday.

Thanks to the generosity of The Bier Garden in downtown Asheville, the middle-schoolers were able to transfer classroom skills to the real world by communicating with the serving staff, properly using their utensils and napkins, and practicing their table manners to create a pleasant atmosphere.

“In addition to their regular curriculum, we work with them on life skills and social skills,” said Exceptional Children’s teacher Sarah Friedman. “We want them to succeed, so we help them to generalize skills from one situation to the next.”

The restaurant trip is one of several social experiences the students have each year. They also went shopping at Asheville Outlets in the fall and learned how to budget, make a shopping list, and purchase goods.

Bier Garden operating partner and general manager Nathan Wardell said he was happy to facilitate the event.

“Education is one of my highest values,” he said. “I’m glad I get to help these kids learn.”
