The Destination Imagination Global Finals wrapped up last weekend in Knoxville, TN. Several BCS schools placed in the top 20!

"The Destination Imagination Challenge Program is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, curiosity and courage through academic Challenges," says DI coordinator and Cane Creek parent Tara Altman. "Our challenges blend STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education with the arts and social entrepreneurship. Students who participate learn invaluable 21st-century skills as well as patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem-solving process," she added.

Fifteen teams from North Carolina competed in the Global finals, eight of those were from #BCS.

The results are as follows:

Cane Creek Middle School- "The Overs and Unders", placed Third at the Global Finals out of 95 teams that made it to this final competition worldwide, in the Drop Zone Engineering Challenge. This team created a structure that held over 720 impact lbs dropped on it from 48". The structure was made of Balsa and weighed 37 grams. They additionally created a 15' inflatable hot air balloon by researching hot air balloon construction and sewing it together. They scored very high in their technical element by wiring motors to turn clouds that "rained" plastic bags that were recycled from trash from the competition the year before to bring an aspect of environmental awareness to their challenge solution.

Fairview Elementary School-14th place- "Pets for Vets", received the Service Learning Challenge TORCHBEARER AWARD for "outstanding impact of bringing awareness of Vietnam veterans and their struggles with PTSD to their community". This team is currently partnering with the VA Hospital in attempting to gain non-profit status for a local group of authors called "Brothers Like These", whose goal it is to be able to share their memories of their Vietnam War experiences in high schools and in other VA hospitals. (Personal note and possible Buncombe County Destination Imagination publicity: They will be performing their challenge solution at the VA Hospital in Asheville on Tuesday, June 5th, at 4:00 for the veterans and staff.)
