Ms. Erin Byrnes, 7th-grade teacher at A. C. Reynolds Middle School, helped her students embark on a unique research project recently. Students tackled subjects ranging from ocean pollution, fashion, and cooking to serious medical concerns such as heart defects and how hearing impairments impact student learning. They wrote papers and put together presentations to explain their findings.

The best of the best were invited to participate in the I-Search Showcase. Sixth-grade students were invited to tour the displays so that they might have a better understanding of the rigor awaiting them in 7th grade.

“This represents the culmination of their learning throughout the year,” said Byrnes. “I wanted them to write their first research paper on something that was of particular interest to them. I wanted them to continue to practice their presentation skills, as well."

Ms. Byrnes expects this to be an annual event for 7th graders as students enjoyed this challenging, but fun, research project.
