The Last Day of School (2018)
On Wednesday, June 13, students and teachers welcomed the summer and celebrated the conclusion of another successful school year. From awards programs and graduations, to craft projects and outdoor games, students made the most of their time together. Many schools shared their memories and photos on social media and the BCS Communications Department brought cameras to a handful of schools to give an up-close look at this fun and energetic day!

Discovery Academy's First Graduates
The Martin L. Nesbitt, Jr. Discovery Academy is a family, and this was never more evident than at the school’s historic first graduation ceremony held on June 10, 2018. The warmth of friendship filled the staging room underneath UNCA’s Kimmel Arena where the seniors prepared their caps and gowns, helped one another look their best, and reminisced about shared milestones of the past four years.

BCS Foundation: Investing in the Future
This year, the Buncombe County Schools Foundation approved $172,000 in classroom grants to teachers and $340,000 in new scholarships to 175 students through the generosity of many donors, including Duke Energy and Wells Fargo.

The Blackhawk Has Landed
North Buncombe High School (NBHS) students cheered the return of their iconic hawk to its perch above the school’s entry way after repairs were completed by a local auto restoration shop. Principal Sircey made sure that graduating seniors were first to see it after its installation on Wednesday, June 13.

Mix 96.5 Teacher of the Year: Ms. Olivia Chiavaras
Congratulations to Ms. Chiavaras of North Buncombe Elementary for being named the Mix 96.5 Teacher of the Year! Her dedication to her students helped her earn this title. Watch the surprise announcement made in her classroom as she is visited by local radio personalities Tammy and Kipper of the Morning Mix.

Emma Elementary's Four-Legged Tutors (WLOS)
Students at Emma Elementary have been able to build their reading skills and confidence this school year thanks to some special four-legged tutors. In this 'Never Stop Learning", we meet Dixie and Baxter and see how they are making a difference to these young readers.

Teacher Campus Celebrates First Anniversary
The rent is going down at the Williams-Baldwin Teacher campus! As we mark the one-year anniversary of opening our doors, these 2 bedroom/2 bath apartments (located near Eblen Intermediate School) will rent for $900/month.

Turning Trash into Treasure
Students at Emma Elementary turned trash into treasure, thanks to their creative teachers. The kids designed and engineered arcade games made of cardboard! Games ranged from whack-a-mole to pinball. Not only did students put their creative twist on classic arcade games, but they exemplified the importance of the phrase ‘reuse, reduce, and recycle’!

Summer meals are underway at BCS sites as of June 18! Business School for Estes Elementary
William W. Estes Elementary fourth-grade teacher Donalyn Small spent this semester teaching her students about successfully opening and running a small business as part of their Entrepreneur unit.

Erwin Middle's STEAM Art
Clyde A. Erwin Middle school math students unveiled a unique addition to their school last weekend. Ms. Hodges' Math 1 class worked in collaboration with the UNC Asheville STEAM studio this to design designed a tessellated art project. The result was a large red "E" to represent Erwin and decorate the school for years to come!

A Daring Bird Rescue
It would have made a great plot for a Pixar movie: The Martin L. Nesbitt, Jr. Discovery Academy parking lot was the scene of a daring wildlife rescue Thursday. A fledgling bird (a Killdeer) was discovered after falling into a storm drain in the parking lot, and found its mother thanks to an Animal Control officer and the City of Asheville.

Former Roberson Softball Player Goes Pro (Citizen-Times)
Izzy McCurry, a Big South all-conference outfielder from Campbell University, was selected this week in the American Softball Association (ASBA) draft by the Future1s.
