Superintendent's Comments

Calendar Change Along with the start of a new year, a new academic semester is just around the corner. Prior to the holiday break, inclement weather caused three straight days of district-wide school closures – December 10-12. A reminder that the make-ups for those days will include the conversion of Tuesday, January 22 from a teacher workday to a regular attendance day. January 22 is currently projected to also be the first day of the new academic semester for our high schools. To support high school staff in closing out the old and transitioning to a new semester – Friday, January 18 will become a two-hour early dismissal. End of Course Exams are projected to begin in several of our high schools next Monday and will be administered throughout the week.

On a separate note, the use of two makeup days from the end of the calendar has shifted the final student attendance day to June 11th. It’s important to remember that this is subject to change as we have a majority of the winter season still ahead of us! In closing, just a reminder that state calendar requirements allow a maximum of 185 days or a minimum of 1025 instructional hours to legally complete a school year. As we make future decisions relative to the calendar, it’s important to keep in mind that our students’ and schools’ performances are compared to school districts statewide.

BCS Aquatic Center On Thursday, January 24, we are planning a ribbon cutting to open the new Buncombe Aquatic Center and 10 lane pool that will serve to host high school swim teams’ practices and competitive meets as well as other competitive and non-competitive swimmers in the area. Following that ceremony, the annual county-wide meet will take place. I want to thank the County Commissioners and our outstanding partners at the YMCA for their support in making this a reality.

My hope is that in the near future, the center will be a host site for teaching water safety skills to elementary school students across our district. The Y currently has a model program for Safety Around Water that has achieved significant success in areas throughout the country.

Mid-Year Graduation A quick reminder that our mid-year graduation ceremony is scheduled for February 2 at 11 a.m. in the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium

Countdown to Kindergarten I want to leave you with a short video produced by our Communications team and including some future screen stars highlighting the virtues of Kindergarten in BCS. District and Elementary School staff are reaching out to parents of rising Kindergartners across the county.
