Superintendent's Comments

National Board Certification: As I have said many times in the past, at the central core of the success of our Buncombe County School System is the high quality of professional educators – classroom teachers, administrators and support staff – just one of the many examples of this quality is the number of National Board Certified teachers in our system, which currently ranks 17th in the entire United States. Congratulations to the 44 teachers renewing their certification as well as the 17 first-time recipients of the certification!

Bringing Home Gold: Congratulations to our Communications Department for receiving six gold awards and one bronze award from the North Carolina School Public Relations Association (NCSPRA). Stacia Harris, Ben Rickert, and Tim Reaves continue to be our “little engine that could.”

Ribbon Cutting: The Buncombe County Aquatic Center opened on Thursday, January 24, and the 10-lane pool facility hosted the annual county-wide swim meet. We are grateful for the partnership and support of our Buncombe County Commissioners as well as the YMCA, our local experts on pool management and operations. A future project that we are so excited about pursuing outside of the competitive swimming world is the Y’s Safety Around Water program and the important skills it represents to generations of our students in the future.

Mid-Year Graduates: Congratulations to the 174 Buncombe County students who graduated last Saturday in our Mid-Year Graduation Ceremony. Many thanks to our At-Large board member Donna Pate for providing words of inspiration to the graduates!
