Superintendent's Comments

Calendar Changes Just a reminder that while tomorrow remains an early dismissal day for our schools, next Monday, March 11, is now a regular student attendance day for instruction. In the past, the month of March has provided some challenges when it comes to winter weather, we do have the potential to use up to three days at the end of our calendar, if needed.

All County Performances I would also like to recognize the excellent performances that took place last month on February 26 during the All-County Choral Program for Elementary, Intermediate, and Middle School students. Thanks to all of our music teachers along with Laura Mitchell for making this such a special event. Thanks, as well, to Brookstone Church in Weaverville for allowing us to rent their facility and being very good hosts.

Celebrate the Arts On March 13, we will be celebrating middle school success through the ARTS. UNC- Asheville will be once again hosting this event in coordination with our partners at United Way. For the remainder of the school year, the Ingles Mt. View Room in the Sherrill Center will house and promote 50 pieces of artwork created by Buncombe County and Asheville City Schools middle school students.

Youth Summit The 2019 Student Summit sponsored by the Partnership for Substance Free Youth in Buncombe County and the Buncombe County Health and Human Services will be held at the Blue Ridge Assembly on March 21. I attended the summit last year and was amazed at the level of participation and investment that was represented by student leaders from our high schools regarding the prevention of drug and alcohol addiction.

Students @ Work Finally, I want to thank Lisa Roberts and Tina Thorpe at the district level for efforts in making Students at Work Week once again a very successful endeavor. Buncombe County Schools teamed with Asheville City and Madison County Schools to provide workplace visits for 1,192 middle school students. Hospitality, Health Services, Advanced Manufacturing, and the Trades were all represented as career opportunities in the future.
