Superintendent's Comments

Awareness and Prevention I would like to give special recognition to all those involved in the Student Summit sponsored by Buncombe County Health and Human Services and Partnership for Substance Free Youth that was held late last month at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly. Topics included opioid and substance abuse awareness, resiliency, and leadership.

Calendar Reminders Spring Break - April 15 through 19 - is just around the corner. We also have scheduled a budget work session for the board on April 24 beginning at 2 p.m. Board members please check your calendar for our annual Top Scholar Awards Banquet to be held on April 30 at the Asheville Renaissance beginning at 6 p.m. Barring any April surprises, Tuesday, June 11 will be our last student attendance day with an early dismissal that afternoon. Memorial Day, May 27, will remain an Optional Teacher Work Day. Graduation ceremonies for our traditional high schools will be on Saturday, June 15.

School Safety Finally, I am pleased to recognize yesterday’s highly successful evacuation and reunification drill that was held at Owen High School. We applaud the efforts of the staff and students at Owen, along with all the first responders taking part in the exercise. Many thanks to the staff at Ridgecrest Conference Center for providing such excellent service as a host site.

Our recognitions included:
  • Our 2020 Teachers of the Year. Also, congratulations to our seven district winners who were chosen to represent BCS. These teachers will go on to compete for the BCS Teacher of the Year distinction that will be announced in September, 2019.
