The Final Countdown It is a very busy time out in our schools as we are counting down days to close out testing and prepare for school graduations. Tuesday, June 11, will be our final student attendance day and will operate as an early dismissal. The graduation schedule will actually begin this Friday as both Early College and The Progressive Education Program (PEP) have evening ceremonies scheduled at A.B. Tech and Roberson High School respectively. Sunday afternoon the Nesbitt Discovery Academy will graduate seniors at UNCA’s Kimmel Arena beginning at 4 p.m. Middle College and Community High School will conduct their 6 p.m. ceremonies on Tuesday, June 11, and Wednesday, June 12. On Saturday morning, June 15, for the first time ever we will conduct outdoor graduations at 9 a.m. in the stadiums of Owen, Erwin, and Enka High Schools. The U.S. Cellular Center downtown will host Saturday graduations for Reynolds High School at 11 a.m. followed by North Buncombe High School at 3 p.m. and Roberson High School at 7:30 p.m.

Showcasing Student Success I would like to encourage our board and public to visit our district homepage and view one or more of the videos that are linked under the article “2019 Senior Walks Show Student Success. Across the county, seniors wore their caps and gowns and walked through the middle, intermediate, and elementary schools within their specific districts. Lots of high fives and cheers from the younger students and what a great message it sent about setting goals and future success!

New Student Safety App I am excited to announce that through an allocation from the Buncombe County Schools (BCS) Foundation we will be launching a pilot program in the fall at T.C. Roberson High School involving a messaging system that will provide educators and other authorized personnel, such as first responders, immediate access to students’ critical information such as medical or behavioral health plans. The Vitals Network System uses a specialized app allowing approved personnel to access pertinent information and de-escalation techniques for identified students via their smartphone whenever they are within 80 feet of the student. BCS and Chapel Hill/Carrboro School Districts will be the first school districts in the country piloting this app for school use. Again, we are appreciative to the BCS Foundation for funding this pilot. Buncombe County Schools and the Buncombe County Schools Foundation will be hosting a joint press conference to announce this initiative on Tuesday, June 11, at 2 p.m. at T.C. Roberson High School.

New Options for Buncombe Co. Homeschool Families Finally, you are going to be hearing tonight about a policy proposal to address eligibility for athletic participation by homeschooled students residing in Buncombe County. This policy will reflect the newly sanctioned regulations adopted by the NCHSAA. Along with our new Virtual Academy that is launching in the fall, we feel that BCS will be able to offer homeschool families some unique educational options.
