Apple Orchard Learning for Bell Students

Kindergarteners from Charles C. Bell Elementary spent a beautiful fall day learning at Sky Top Orchard.

A fall chill is in the air. That means it's time to drink pumpkin spice lattes and go apple picking across Western North Carolina! Many of our schools took field trips to area orchards to enjoy some fresh air, sunshine, and tasty apples. We tagged along with Kindergarteners from Charles C. Bell Elementary School recently. Ms. Sally Little, one of the teachers who helped plan the trip, shares more about why this has become a fun tradition for the school.

“The past 2 years Bell Elementary kindergarten has gone to Sky Top Orchard in Flat Rock," Little said. "This is a great orchard where students can pick apples, learn about how apples are grown, and the hard work that goes into maintaining an orchard. There are animals students can feed and pet. It was great to see student personalities come out when they are picking apples or petting animals. This environment allows them a wide-open space to experience the joy of nature; kids love being outside and being able to play. It is such an amazing experience for my kids to take part in. Seeing their personalities come alive outside of the classroom is such a joy as a teacher. Many students have never been apple picking or to an apple orchard and they are so excited to pick their own apples themselves and take them home. There is a sense of pride when they carry their heavy apple bags onto the tractor and hug them close.”
