Superintendent's Comments

National Ranking I want to begin by recognizing the Enka High School FFA (Future Farmers of America) team that competed nationally in Indianapolis last week and not only received a gold medal but posted the best result ever achieved by a North Carolina agricultural team with a fifth-place finish out of 45 states’ teams. We will be inviting them to a board meeting for recognition in an upcoming month!

Local Lion Promise I would like to publicly express appreciation to Mars Hill University and President Tony Floyd for including Buncombe County students in their Local Lion Promise, which guarantees a 50 percent-off tuition if they so choose to attend. This is certainly a much appreciated decision on Mars Hill’s part that potentially could be quite impactful to our students' post-secondary opportunities.

Global Education Because it is International Education Week, it’s an opportunity to recognize our K-5 dual language programs across the county that serve 649 students through 35 teachers representing 16 countries. As well, I want to extend kudos to the 11 teachers and administrators that currently hold their N.C. Global Educator Digital badges!

Early Bird Tours Yesterday across the county we held morning and afternoon Early Bird Kindergarten tours. I understand that we had a strong turnout of parents and future kindergarten enrollees. Thanks to Jennifer Reed and our Elementary Principals and staff for their efforts to make this a success!

Budget Update While we await a 2019-2020 budget from the State, I wanted to share some recent data with you. Last year’s per-pupil expenditure for our school district was $9,977 which ranked us 50th out of 115 school systems. This amount designated for each of our 23,600 plus students included local, state and federal funds minus child nutrition dollars. We also became aware that 90.5 percent of our total operating budget for 2018-2019 was devoted entirely toward staff salaries and benefits; that is the highest percentage figure in recent memory. Speaking of salaries, two bills approved by the legislature are now in front of the governor for consideration, one tied to the teacher step increase and principal raises, while the second includes teacher pay increases and bonuses along with a central office and non-certified percentage rate increase.

Beautiful Music Mark your calendar for the All-County High School Chorus concert on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Downtown First Baptist Church.
