Symphony Players 'Adopt' 7 BCS Schools

BCS will ring with the sound of music this spring as four members of the North Carolina Symphony (NCS) “adopt” seven of our community schools.

Through NCS’ Adopt-a-School program, the four musicians will work directly with teachers at each school to schedule engaging and educational virtual visits for their students, said Jason Spencer, NCS Director of Education.

"The activities can range from instrument introductions for elementary students to sectionals for middle/high school string or brass players," he said. "We are putting musicians and teachers in charge of creating virtual visits that will be meaningful and beneficial for students at their school."

"I am so pleased that seven of our music programs in Buncombe County Schools will have the opportunity to work with musicians from the North Carolina Symphony through the Adopt-a-School program,” said BCS Arts Education Specialist Laura Mitchell. “I am grateful to our teachers who took the time and energy to apply and to seek these experiences for our students. Music education creates community that can expand beyond the walls of our classrooms by interactions with those in other parts of our state and world. When that happens, our students grow as musicians and are better prepared citizens who will appreciate the arts for a lifetime.”

NCS musician Erik Dyke (ukulele/double bass) will work with William W. Estes Elementary School music teacher Jaime Graeber. NCS musician Beth Lunsford (flute/piccolo) will work with Candler Elementary School music teacher Peter Wilbur. NCS musician Kurt Tsend (viola) will work with music teacher Elizabeth Terry (Valley Springs Middle School, T.C. Roberson High School). NCS musician Paul Goldsberry (violin) will work with music teacher Paul Zinke (Enka Intermediate School, Enka Middle School, Enka High School).
