BCS educators teach students the values of environmental stewardship to make the world a more beautiful and sustainable place.

Earlier this month, Asheville GreenWorks recognized Glen Arden Elementary School media center specialist Lee Ann Smith with its Environmental Excellence Award in the category of Education Excellence. Smith received the award because of her environmental focused programs like Eco Readers, along with the composting program and pollinator garden at Glen Arden.

“I was so surprised and happy,” Smith said. “This award underscores the importance of implementing environmental education, something that can be done across all grade levels and curricular areas. Most importantly, this award helps shine a light on the efforts of our students' passion to care for the earth.”

Christine Brown, environmental educator with Asheville GreenWorks, said she nominated Smith for her work with Eco Readers, a club for children who love to read and are interested in caring for the environment. Smith started the club with fellow teachers Lisa Horak and Katherine Grainger in 2010. Eco Readers has since grown from an after-school reading club to an action-based stewardship organization.

“Our students have planted trees, studied worms and created worm bins, made treasures from trash, helped design and plant a school pollinator garden, saved hundreds of pounds of waste from the landfill by composting fruit and veggie scraps, and learned the four R's of the Conservation Cycle – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle,” Smith said.
