'Rolling to Feed' During Virtual Learning

Whether school is virtual or in-person, Buncombe County Schools Nutrition staff make sure every child has access to the food they need and deserve.

In order to better serve the community, Nutrition staff members at multiple schools began delivering free meals to apartment complexes, mobile home parks, and community centers across the county last week. The Rolling to Feed bus, normally used for the BCS Free Summer Meals program, joined the effort by delivering meals to the YMCA Youth Services at Beaverdam and other sites on Friday.

“We bring hot, nutritious meals to families who can’t make it to the distribution points at our schools,” said School Nutrition assistant and bus driver Gloria Lewis.

She and fellow bus driver Tony Shelton handed out meals at the YMCA and two other Erwin District sites on Friday.

“I do this for the children,” Ms. Lewis said. “I’ve really missed seeing their little faces and speaking to them. I love when they smile and say ‘thank you.’”

It’s a continuation of care and outreach from School Nutrition that rapidly expanded after school buildings closed in March 2020. More than two million meals have been served since the start of the pandemic, and other support services, like the BCS Family Resource Center, have collaborated with School Nutrition for even broader impact.

“We haven’t stopped,” Ms. Lewis said. “Everyone is working harder than ever to make sure the kids are fed.”
