After retiring six years ago, Anne Alley missed teaching so much that she came back.

“I missed that interaction with the students,” she said. “I missed the challenge and enjoyment of seeing them learn something, and their personalities and humor.”

The former first- and second-grade Emma Elementary School teacher now serves as a substitute there and at Leicester Elementary School. She filled in for Catherine Messer’s third-grade class at Leicester on Monday.

“One of the things I love about subbing is getting experience in all those different grade levels in a week,” she said. “I might teach kindergarten on Monday and fourth-grade on Tuesday. I’ve done PE, music, lots of different things that I didn’t get to do as a regular teacher.”

May 1-5 is Substitute Teacher Appreciation Week, celebrating the men and women who take the time to teach our students children when regular teachers are unavailable. There were 602 substitute teachers signed up to serve/work in Buncombe County Schools as of Tuesday.Substitue teacher Anne Alley shows a piece of paper to children while sitting in front of them.

“Our substitute teachers are invaluable to Buncombe County Schools,” said Cynthia Lopez, Human Resources Director. “We rely on them for last-minute jobs as well as long-term substitute work. Our school days run smoother and our students are able to continue learning even when their teachers are absent. This wouldn't be possible without support from our dedicated substitute teachers.”

What makes a good substitute teacher? A love of children, good communication skills and the ability to multitask, Alley said.

“I’d say give it a try and see if you enjoy it,” she said.

BCS is always looking for classroom substitutes, as well as cafeteria and bus driver subs as well! For more information, visit buncombeschools.org/substitute.
