Students and coaches know that Buncombe County Schools is a fantastic place to be an athlete. Across the many playing fields, our schools consistently lead in their conferences and across the state. Now, BCS Superintendent Dr. Tony Baldwin has been chosen as the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s (NCHSAA) 2017-2018 Bob McRae Superintendent of the Year!
According to the NCHSAA announcement, Dr. Baldwin has “served with distinction” and in his role as Superintendent has “done the most for high school athletics.” Baldwin received his award on Thursday, May 3, at Chapel Hill’s Dean E. Smith Center.
Baldwin was recognized for his years of service to NCHSAA, his early implementation of a professional development and certification program for BCS coaches, his continued support for athletic facility improvements, and his leadership on the NCHSAA board, said BCS Athletic Specialist David Ball.
“Dr. Baldwin has established a great legacy across the region and across the state,” Ball said.

"I am extremely proud to have received the Bob McRae Superintendent Award. The NCHSAA is an excellent organization that truly supports and enriches the educational experience of student-athletes across our state," Baldwin said. "I would definitely consider my opportunity to serve on the association's board of directors as a highlight within my professional career. High school athletics represents such a powerful environment for preparing our students with a wealth of skills toward success in all facets of life."
We are grateful for Dr. Baldwin’s leadership, dedication to excellence, and support of environments where athletics thrive!
