It was a busy week in Buncombe County high schools, as staff worked together with students to make the Oct. 21-25 College Application Week a success. The week was all about helping BCS seniors get organized and excited about the often demanding college application process. Dozens of colleges and universities in the region waived their application fees last week, so encouraging and helping seniors to submit their applications was crucial.

“We want to inspire all students to have a plan for after graduation. That could be a four-year, two-year, or technical college, military, or the workforce; whatever path is right for that individual,” said Counselor Michele Ferry. “This event just opens minds and doors for so many students, and it brings them into the reality that graduation is just a few months away.”

Each day of the week, high schools and specialty programs held events to help students apply for colleges, scholarships, and financial aid. Recruiting teams from area colleges visited schools to answer student questions. Also, faculty sported their alumni gear and decorated their doors in their alma mater’s colors!

“I've been counseling students for 22 years. Starting in ninth-grade, I say to them, 'you have to have a plan for after you cross that stage in June, as well as a backup plan so that you can become a responsible, contributing, and productive member of society,'” said Ferry.

BCS school counselors also used a new college planning tool called Naviance, an award-winning platform that helps students, counselors, and parents with college and career prep beginning in the eighth-grade.
