During National School Lunch Week, BCS celebrated our dedicated School Nutrition staff and a lunch program that brings fresh, local produce to our students.

As kindergarteners entered the cafeteria on Friday, Hominy Valley Elementary School Nutrition Manager Gayle Lane finished putting up an educational poster about sweet potatoes. It crowned a fall-themed table of tasty samples – sweet potato chips and muffins.

“We’ve been serving North Carolina sweet potatoes for a while, but I wanted to make something special for them,” Lane said. “And I want them to get the educational side to. When they pick up the muffin, they can look at the poster and think ‘this is how it’s grown.’”

Like School Nutrition staff at other schools, Lane is proud to serve nutritious meals that incorporate locally-grown produce, whole grains, as well as unusual fruits like starfruit, jicama sticks, and tangelos.

The BCS School Nutrition Department’s 230 employees served more than 4.6 million meals last year in the School Breakfast, School Lunch, After School, Summer Meals, and Fresh Fruit and Vegetable programs, said Director Lisa Payne. The department includes the Rolling to Feed bus, which provides hot meals to communities during the summer.

Registered Dietician Taylor Nobles travels to elementary schools throughout the district to teach about local fruits and vegetables, as well as more exotic produce.

“We do a lot of nutritional education and produce fairs,” she said. “It’s really important to teach them about these things early, because they develop eating habits at a young age.”

“I like the fact that we feed kids this food that’s really good for them,” Lane added. “They’ll grow up healthy and strong.”
