From the Buncombe County Schools Foundation and the BCS Communications Department
Buncombe County Schools (BCS) and the Buncombe County Schools Foundation (BCSF), together with community partners, are hitting the road to make sure no child goes hungry this summer.
Your community schools and the YMCA already serve children during the summer at designated sites throughout the county through the Summer Meals Program (SMP), but many children can’t reach the sites because of transportation limitations.
Enter the Rolling to Feed bus.
Our local partners, including Park Ridge Health, Abbott Construction, CarePartners Foundation, Cheadle’s Art&Sign, and BCSF converted a school activity bus into a meal delivery system, complete with snappy graphics and room for lots of food storage. The bus will deliver appetizing and nutritious meals to children who can’t reach our SMP feeding sites.
Feeding children is my passion,” said BCS School Nutrition Department Director Lisa Payne. “It’s the passion of everyone on my staff, and it’s a passion of the Board of Education. … The Rolling to Feed bus is a great opportunity to reach the students and children of Buncombe County.”
One the best indicators of knowledge summer knowledge retention is whether a child has enough to eat, said BCSF Executive Director Lisa Adkins.
“Hunger is an issue throughout Buncombe County in the summer,” she said. “This bus will make a difference in kids’ lives every day. We can’t express enough gratitude to the community and donors who helped make this bus a reality.”
We know these meals will benefit children and prepare them for their tomorrow, Payne added.
“That’s what we do. That’s who we are as a family,” she said.
