Schools Honor Area Veterans

More than 600 gathered to honor our nation’s veterans at the ceremony hosted by Avery's Creek Elementary.

More than 600 people gathered to honor our nation’s veterans Thursday. The patriotic November 7 event included students from multiple Buncombe County schools, as well as visiting area veterans.

During the gathering hosted by Avery's Creek Elementary, T.C. Roberson High School Air Force JROTC cadets performed a color guard and flag folding ceremony. Singers from Valley Springs Middle School and Avery’s Creek choruses shared their music. Veterans also had the opportunity to speak about their experiences serving in the United States military. It was a touching experience for students and veterans alike.

“When our cadets performed the flag folding ceremony for the Avery's Creek Veterans Day Ceremony, we not only honored veterans, but we also taught the students the importance of love of country, and respect and honor for our veterans,” said Roberson JROTC instructor MSgt. Michael McCrea. “It was an honor to lead the students in the Pledge of Allegiance, and I was personally touched by the patriotism and pride the students showed when reciting the pledge. Our participation has been a tradition at the school, and one that I hope continues for many years to come.”

Following the ceremony, JROTC cadets reflected on the opportunity to honor those who have served and sacrificed for our country, as well as to educate younger students.

“This was my second year doing the flag ceremony at Avery's Creek," said Roberson sophomore cadet Jacob Stroupe. "It's important to honor veterans and to make sure our younger generations know why we honor them.”

“I had the honor of reading the flag folding script for today's ceremony," added sophomore cadet Elyse Cedeno. "While reading, I was able to see the students watching each of the folds and listening intently. I am proud that we were able to educate them about the flag on such an important day."
