At North Buncombe Middle, students have come to expect to find books in their media center. But today, they found something new – a visiting local author who has captivated Buncombe County and the country with his tales of mystery and adventure! The Blackhawks were visited by New York Times best-selling author Robert Beatty, the creator of the popular "Serafina" series.

During his visit, students had an early glimpse of the yet-to-be-released novel, "Serafina and the Splintered Heart," and Mr. Beatty read the first chapter aloud as students gathered among the book shelves of their school media center. The young "Serafina" fans had plenty of thoughtful questions for the author about his characters, story themes and inspirations.

“I love talking to young readers and interacting with them,” Beatty said. “It’s how I learned how to write and it’s part of my writing process – to interact with people. I learn from them and they learn from me.”

Ms. Kerri Hampton teaches eighth grade English Language Arts at North Buncombe and was instrumental in organizing the inspiring experience for her students. Hampton met Beatty through a local book club and found herself helping the author develop a "Serafina" study guide for teachers, which she now uses with her students as they read the books together.

"As an English teacher, I love how he introduces new vocabulary words," Hampton said. "He makes it challenging enough for advanced readers, yet accessible for young readers."

She says that the author's level of integrity and willingness to collaborate are inspiring.

As Mr. Beatty prepares to release his latest book in the series, he is partnering with Buncombe County Schools and local Barnes & Noble bookstores to hold a book fair to raise funds for our students. Would you like to meet this dynamic author yourself? Stay tuned to our social media channels to learn more about the upcoming book fair from July 2-8,* which includes both a launch party and a wrap-up celebration open to the public!

*From July 2-8, enter book fair ID #12164083 at any Barnes & Noble, in-store or online, and a portion of the sale will be donated directly to BCS. (Please note that purchases made outside of these dates will not benefit the school system.)
