State Award for Cane Creek Chorus Teacher

The North Carolina Music Educators Association Middle School Section recently handed her the Richard E. Keasler Teacher of the Year Award, “for bringing beauty to many lives and inspiring students to realize their best through dedicated service.”

Cane Creek Middle School choral director Kathryn Strickler believes in the power of music.

“Music helps people connect to emotions and meaning, even without words,” she said. “It helps my students get attuned to each other and be better human beings.”

The North Carolina Music Educators Association Middle School Section recently handed her the Richard E. Keasler Teacher of the Year Award, “for bringing beauty to many lives and inspiring students to realize their best through dedicated service.”

Her inclusive instruction focuses on each student’s learning style. She incorporates movement and visual cues that help students learn appropriate techniques and muscle memory. She also encourages the singers to imagine how their individual voices connect with each other.

“Every different type of learner has something to hold on to,” she said. “They get an experience that will help them remember the material.”

Eighth-grader Paige Marino said she’s always loved music, but Ms. Strickler has created a space where that love can really thrive.

“She makes you feel like you’re personally involved with the songs,” she said. “It makes everyone feel included.”
