It's National School Nurse Day! So, in our Teacher Feature this week, BCS recognizes our school nurses who treat our students when they have a skinned knee or a more serious condition that may impact their ability to learn. Renee Cornwell has been a school nurse for 9 years. She currently works at North Windy Ridge Intermediate, Weaverville Primary, and Weaverville Elementary.

She says, “My primary duty is to make sure my students are in a safe environment and all of their health needs are being met.”

She says school nurses have days that are just focused on “boo boos” and Band-Aids, but her most important tasks revolve around supporting our students with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, and allergies.

“We make sure they are as healthy as possible so they can learn. We are really focused on identifying health issues and helping families manage them,” she says.

Our school nurses offer support to teachers, as well. Heather Neal is a 5th-grade teacher at North Windy Ridge. She says Ms. Cornwell is a positive influence in the school. She is an advisor and invaluable resource for teachers to understand their students' health needs.

“I know that safety and health are priorities in the classroom. When a student’s diabetes is under control, we know that child can engage in their best learning,” says Neal.

Ms. Cornwell is also active in preventative care and nutrition education for students and staff members at her schools.

“I strive to teach healthy habits to our students that will last a lifetime,” says Cornwell.

Cornwell grew up and still lives in the Weaverville area. She says she’s proud to be a part of this community and wants only the best for the students she serves.

“I love the kids,” she says. “I’ve been a nurse since 1988, and I've always worked with kids. Students come from many different backgrounds and I am able to make connections with all of them.”
