Virtual Academy Now Enrolling

Launched in 2019, BCSVA is the premier virtual academy in western North Carolina, a hub where students can access online courses at their own pace.

Buncombe County Schools Virtual Academy (BCSVA) has tripled its capacity from last year and will continue enrolling new students for the spring semester.

Launched in 2019, BCSVA is the premier virtual academy in western North Carolina, a hub where students can access online courses at their own pace. Unlike BCS’ remote learning response to COVID-19, the Virtual Academy is a continuing solution for students in grades 6-12 who thrive in an online learning environment with a flexible schedule. It’s perfect for students with jobs, travel plans, or life circumstances that make full-time, on-campus enrollment difficult. It’s also a great choice for homeschooling families who want the benefits of a rigorous course of study, local teachers, and personalized instruction. Full enrollment in the Virtual Academy is free for families residing in the BCS school district if enrolled in two or more courses.

BCSVA’s curriculum is aligned with the BCS curriculum, creating easier transitions to and from our community schools. BCSVA staff guide students through course and schedule planning. A la carte solutions are available for homeschool partner families. Learn more at Virtual.BuncombeSchools.org.

"Virtual Academy is an innovative program that provides enriching opportunities for students,” said Ms. Megan Percy, who teaches for the program. “As teachers, we are truly able to individualize instruction based on student need and standards mastery. Courses are customized to set all students up for success. Additionally, we provide daily one-on-one support and consistent communication, allowing us to build meaningful relationships with students. In this environment, learners are able to reach new heights in both their personal and academic growth."

Virtual Academy students have access to core BCS courses taught by BCS teachers, along with the North Carolina Virtual Public School, which offers a broader range of courses for advanced students and those with special interests. Thanks to a BCS partnership with Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, juniors and seniors have the opportunity to get college credit while also earning high school diplomas.

Recently, BCSVA announced an exclusive partnership with the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics that will deliver cutting-edge STEM and humanities courses for Virtual Academy Students.

Virtual Academy students also can participate in BCS athletics if they meet certain eligibility requirements.
