Owen Middle Athletics
Welcome to Owen Middle School Athletics!
Owen Middle is a proud supporter of all our student athletes. We know that early involvement in sports build strength and character for a lifetime, whether or not the student continues to play after they have graduated.
If you have questions, reach out to our Athletic Director, Coach Grayson (troy.grayson@bcsemail.org).
Students MUST complete the following items in order to be involved in OMS athletics.
6th Grade: Select "Managers Only" to register. There is no fee for Managers.
7th & 8th Grade : BEFORE TRYOUTS- If you are participating in tryouts for a team with a limited number of spots, please register using the PRE-SEASON TRYOUTS Family ID Registration.
If you are selected for the team, you will then need to pay the $40 athletic fee.
Student Athletic Policies
Eligibility
In order for any student to be a member of an athletic team, he/she must meet the following minimum requirements:
A student may not participate on a 7th or 8th grade team if he or she turns 15 years old on or before August 31st of the current school year.
A student must be in attendance at least 85% (77 of 90 days) of the previous semester.
Upon entering the 7th grade, students are automatically eligible for the fall sports season. A student who fails 2 or more core classes (ELA, SS, Science, and Math) on a nine week report card is not eligible for the next sport season.
Athletes, including cheerleaders, are required to maintain academic eligibility as defined above each nine weeks grading period and meet the attendance requirement as stated above each semester. All sports have the same minimum eligibility requirements.
Participation
All Buncombe County middle schools are members of the French Broad Middle School Athletic Conference. This conference includes the following middle schools: Reynolds, Cane Creek, Enka, Erwin, Asheville, North Buncombe, Owen, and Valley Springs. The opportunity to be a member of all sports teams is open to all students in grades seven and eight.
By North Carolina Athletic Policy, sixth graders are not eligible to participate in interscholastic sports.
Sixth grade students who would like to be involved in athletics should speak to a coach concerning the possibility of becoming a manager of a team.
Tryouts
Coaches will conduct tryouts in each sport at the beginning of each season. (Students who tryout and do not make an athletic team are encouraged to participate in outside sports activities to continue to develop athletic skills.)
Continued hard work and participation may make students even better players than some of those who were selected for athletic teams.
Physical Examination - Student Athletic Registration - Insurance
Each athlete and cheerleader must have a physical examination by a doctor before he/she will be allowed to participate in tryouts. The physical examination is valid for 395 days from the date of the physical. Family ID registration is required after roster is chosen.
Transportation Fee
A $40.00 fee is charged to all student athletes one time during the school year to help cover the cost of transportation to athletic events. This fee is paid only once, so students who participate in two or more sports pay the transportation fee at the time they first participate in a school sport. This will be collected on your Family ID registration.
Student Athlete Expectations
All student-athletes represent Buncombe County and their respective schools. Therefore, each student athlete's actions both in and out of school must reflect positively on the district and school community or the participant will not represent the school in any athletic activities.
While at school, student-athletes are expected to set positive examples for the rest of the student body. All student-athletes are expected to follow school rules at all times.
