At Johnston Elementary’s Community Day, the August summer afternoon was full of ”Joyful Johnstons” and laughter as teachers, students, and families gathered in the neighborhoods where the  school’s families live. Special guests joined in on the fun to help celebrate the start of the new school year.

The popular Kona Ice delivered free snow cones to students and their families as a refreshing summertime treat. The Read to Succeed program set up a booth, where excited young readers were able to take home a free book.

The Asheville Fire Department stole the show, pulling up with  its big red fire truck. As the summer sun blazed overhead,  firefighters turned on the hose, sending a refreshing spray of water into the air. Squeals of delight echoed through the streets as children dashed through the mist, cooling off and creating unforgettable summer memories with their teachers.
