In the heart of the Erwin District, a group of eager second and third graders dove into the pages of fair away lands for a Summer Reading Camp filled with stories, learning and fun. This jam packed camp helped students develop their love of reading.
“We brought in some of our best reading teachers across the Erwin District to work in small groups in order to help young readers become proficient readers,” said Clyde A. Erwin High Assistant Principal Stefanie Buckner Hill. “Students also had the opportunity to participate in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) challenges as well as selecting books from the Buncombe County Schools Bookmobile.”
Little did students know that their hardwork and dedication would be recognized by two very special guest visitors: Ted E. the Asheville Tourist mascot and the Erwin School Board Member Kim Plemmons. As the children settled into their reading circle, the unexpected visitors brought an extra layer of magic to an already enchanting summer experience.
“Our students were so excited to see Ted E. the Tourist,” said Mrs. Buckner Hill. “A few of our students have been to a Tourist baseball game, but many had not and were excited to learn that the team mascot took time out his day to come celebrate their success. are appreciative of our community partners, like the Tourist, in celebrating our students' success and hard work to improve their reading over the summer.”
Students were jumping with excitement to have a photo taken with Teddy and get his autograph. The Summer Reading Camp was funded by Read to Achieve. Mrs. Buckner Hill hopes there will be more events to bring the Erwin district closer together.
