✨ William W. Estes Elementary School’s 18th Blacklight Show exploded in colorful fun as fourth graders entertained students from Johnston Elementary School earlier this month.
As the house lights turned off and the black lights came in the Estes gym, Johnston students "oohed" and "ahhed" as the neon cast danced their way through a story about a shepherd rescuing his sheep and his fellow villagers from the Goblin King. From a huge “fire-breathing” dragon to woodland critters and talking sheep, the big production celebrated creativity and the blending of art, music, and movement.
“The best thing about this show is that every fourth grader at our school has an opportunity to literally glow,” said art teacher Matthew Lane. “It's a rite of passage at Estes. There is something for every fourth grader to do regardless of their talent. There's nothing quite like it anywhere else. It's made originally each year from scratch.”
Estes hosted seven performances of the show, two for fellow Estes students, two at night for their families, and three for other schools (Johnston, Candler Elementary, and Emma Elementary this year).
“It's a special bonding activity,” Lane said. “Not only do they work together with their class but with the entire fourth grade to make something special for themselves and others.”
