JROTC cadets at A.C. Reynolds High School recently learned how to ceremoniously and respectfully retire a United States flag.
“Prior to the ceremony, the students prepared the flags,” said Senior Army Instructor David Wise. “Flags too large to burn were cut into smaller pieces. Some of the stars were separated and given to an organization that gives them to veterans with notes thanking them for their service.”
Lieutenant Colonel Wise said events such as these are important to teach the younger generation.
“It's always enjoyable seeing the cadets participate in these types of activities - service to nation and veterans events,” he explained. “I enjoy seeing them learn to appreciate and respect our nation's customs and our veterans' sacrifices.”
Other community organizations came out for the retirement ceremony along with the JROTC of Charles D. Owen High School. An estimated 50 flags were retired at this event.
