The Asheville Symphony Youth Orchestra’s Percussion Ensemble, in collaboration with the Mars Hill University Percussion Studio, hosted a vibrant concert on April 10 that took students on a musical journey across three continents.
Held in the Moore Auditorium at Mars Hill University, the event featured performances by young musicians who showcased a diverse range of musical traditions. The concert began with a dynamic West African ensemble, filling the hall with the rhythms of djembe and dundun drums, with captivating patterns and energetic beats.
The performance then transitioned to a serene Chinese ensemble featuring traditional instruments like the pengling and the tanggu. This segment offered a stark contrast with its meditative melodies, demonstrating the diversity of percussion instruments.
The lively performance concluded with a trip to the Caribbean, bringing the sounds of steel drums and calypso rhythms to the forefront. This final act not only had the students dancing and swaying to the upbeat tunes but also included a fun interactive element for the students. Students were able to follow along to the song “Rant and Rave” and participated in a fun round of limbo.
The concert was well-received by students and faculty alike, who appreciated the opportunity to experience such a wide array of musical traditions and interactive elements. It was a day of cultural celebration and musical excellence that highlighted the talents of young musicians and the educational initiatives of both institutions.
