In the heart of Big Green Country, it’s hard to imagine A.C. Reynolds High School (ACRHS) without Larry Brow. For years, he’s been a guiding force - teaching, coaching, and mentoring with a passion that goes far beyond the job description. Whether as a Physical Education (PE) teacher, football or softball coach, athletic director, and now as a substitute teacher, Mr. Brow has been a constant source of inspiration for students and staff alike.
Mr. Brow began his career at ACRHS in 2003 where his passion for the Rockets and the community quickly became evident. He spent years mentoring athletes and students to excel in anything in life. Known to many in the community as Coach Brow, he eventually helped the football and softball teams to state championships, even setting the foundation for those who moved on to bigger things, such as Country Music artists Chase Rice and Luke Combs, Caleb Pressly with Barstool Sports, and Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions.
“What makes this school is our students,” said Mr. Brow. “It’s amazing to see how far they’ve come. I’m proud of all of them, not because of their fame, but because of the kind of people they’ve become. To be around the students at ACRHS daily is something I enjoy deeply.”
Mr. Brow has a special gift of connecting with all students, and not just the ones on the field. Known for his warm smile and words of encouragement, he stands in the hallway during class change as he high fives and hugs students. Coach is no stranger to anyone at ACRHS, and takes pride in helping mold the young Rockets for life after graduation.
“Coach has taught me a lot that I will never forget,” said Qwanell, a senior. “He is someone here at ACRHS that I will always remember because of the impact he has had on my life and the wisdom he has taught me.”
For decades Coach has been making a difference for everyone he comes in contact with, and that is why he is loved by so many.
“Every Rocket student knows Coach Brow,” said Principal Ben Alexander. “Even though he is technically retired, he is here almost every day - as a sub, as a coach, as an individual still making a positive impact and meaningful impact in students’ lives. Coach Brow embodies what it means to be a Rocket - excellence in all things, dedication and commitment to our kids and community, and he possesses a true love for Big Green County.”
Both of Mr. Brow’s daughters attended ACRHS, and now after several years he and his wife Kim Brow work together at the school. The love and passion for Rocket Country runs deep in the family, along with the love Coach has for every student he encounters. Today as we honor Mr. Brow, we recognize his unique abilities to inspire greatness. His legacy isn’t just measured in wins or titles - it’s found in the extraordinary achievements of the student he’s coached, mentored, and believed in. In honor of National Substitute Teacher day, thank you Mr. Brow, and all the other amazing subs that help out at all Buncombe County Schools.
