At Black Mountain Elementary (BME), it’s often the quiet heroes who leave the biggest mark, and Mercedes James is one of them. A graduate of Charles D. Owen High School, Mercedes has brought her passion and care back to the community she calls home.

As a custodian at BME, Mercedes does far more than keep the school spotless - she creates a positive, welcoming atmosphere that brightens the day for students and staff alike. Her hard work, cheerful attitude, and genuine care for others make her an integral part of the school’s heartbeat.

“I love being here for the kids and the staff,” Mercedes said. “We are a big family here, and it’s wonderful to be a part of this community.”

Principal Michael Benigo praised her contributions saying, “Mercedes' impact goes beyond her job description. She sets an example of dedication and kindness that inspires everyone at Black Mountain Elementary. Our school is better because of her.”

Mercedes exemplifies what it means to be a warhorse. Her positivity and genuine care for the students and staff at BME make her an irreplaceable part of the school family. Her work reminds everyone that it’s often the behind-the-scenes contributions that make the biggest difference.
