The air was filled with anticipation as fifth graders at Black Mountain Elementary (BME) prepared for a day unlike any other. Warren Wilson College (WWC) students arrived with the tools and excitement to transform ordinary lessons into extraordinary scientific adventures.

The collaboration is part of an ongoing initiative to foster a love for science and spark a curiosity about college in younger students. Fifth graders have studied the human body, specifically the neurological system. WWC brought models of the human brain that brought the textbook to life.

“It’s not everyday you can listen to experts such as professor Jen Mozolic and her students,” said fifth grade teacher Caroline Clark. “Opportunities like this enable students to not only benefit from hands-on learning, but also let students see a potential path for a career.”

The partnership not only enriched the learning experience for BME students, but also provided valuable teaching experiences for the WWC students. For the fifth graders, the day was an unforgettable adventure. Ms. Clark said she is eager to bring more professionals in for students to learn from.
