Superintendent Dr. Jackson continued his full-day visits by spending some time with the students and staff at Weaverville Elementary.
The current school building was built in 1997, but the site has housed a school since 1927. Originally called the Lower School, it has been a high school and a middle school. Today it is an elementary school serving students in grades 2-4. While most of the building is newer, sections of the original building still remain! Weaverville Elementary is home to over 300 students and over 50 staff members.
“Weaverville, and the North Buncombe community in general, are great supporters of the school,” said Principal Mary Nichols. “We have teachers who have a long history in our community, and generations of families have come through our schools. This creates a really solid foundation for learning and growing together every day. Being on Main Street, and partnering with Weaverville Primary in so many ways, including for our Parent Teacher Organization, means we get to have a small school with big connections to the town around us. Our school community feels loved and supported by our Weaverville Neighbors.”
Principal Nichols says there are many things that make her school unique!
“Weaverville Elementary is a Leader in Me School. We focus on ‘The 7 Habits of Happy Kids’ and goal-setting, and we provide a lot of different opportunities for our students to be leaders in our school! We have a live news show each morning, led by students. We have different jobs that students apply for throughout the school, and each month teachers and staff lead different clubs that students can sign up for. Our school prioritizes sustained academic achievement by teaching our students habits that will support them in reaching their goals for years to come. Our teachers set goals with students regularly, and we track them in our Leadership Portfolios. We want our students to have a solid social and emotional foundation, and coupled with high expectations for academic achievement, we know we're setting them up for an amazing future!”
