The Asheville Museum of Science is filled with endless learning opportunities, and students from Avery’s Creek Elementary experienced all the facility had to offer in a hands-on field trip.
First grade students learned about weather instruments in the STEM lab and were able to create their own. Other activities included a gem scavenger hunt and paleontology exploration. This was a great way for the students to make connections with the content they are learning in the classroom and how it affects our daily lives.
“For the majority of the students this was their first experience at the Asheville Museum of Science,” said First Grade teacher Heather Torres. “It connected them to the resources in our community and helped take their learning outside of the classroom. The best part was getting the students out of the classroom and giving them a chance to bond and make memories together. The STEM lab about weather was also a great connection to our classroom learning.”
For some students science is one of their favorite subjects, and they love learning more about it.
“Science is important, because if you don't learn about it I think that it can be difficult to do stuff,” said first grader Carter. “I learned that the wind can be powerful and how to measure the speed of it.”
