Buncombe County Schools (BCS) employs thousands of extraordinary staff all across the district. BCS takes pride in recruiting the best in order to inspire, educate, encourage and elevate students on a daily basis. As a way to honor the hard work and dedication that staff pour into our schools, we are recognizing those that go above and beyond to make BCS one of the best. This BCS Staff Spotlight recognizes Marian Waters from Valley Springs Middle School (VSM).
Mrs. Waters has spent over 30 years with BCS where she has traveled countless miles as a bus driver and helped serve breakfast and lunch to students as well. When meeting Mrs. Waters it’s easy to see her secret ingredient for everything she does is lots of love.
“I love what I do at BCS,” she said. “I get to support the students that step on my bus and walk the halls daily. While they are at school I make sure they receive a nutritious and presentable lunch.”
Principal Will Thrasher said that Mrs. Waters is a dedicated employee to VSM and is an important figure at the school. Over the years, Mrs. Waters has remained steadfast in her dedication to the school.
“Mrs. Waters is consistent in her commitment to working at Valley Springs as she has been working for the school in some capacity for over 30 years,” Mr. Thrasher said. “She presents herself in a professional manner and always rises to the occasion to help support Valley Springs and those around her. She is a pleasure to work with and many have and still can learn a lot from her.”
When asked why Mrs. Waters has dedicated so much of her life to the school her answer was simple- love for her students, the staff, and the community.
“Valley Springs has always been like one big family, and that is what makes it such a special place to be,” she explained. “I am driven to help students and spend time with them as I am the first and last face they see that represents Valley Springs each day. I have always loved where I was, and it is always my goal to help those around me.”
It’s clear to see that her kind heart and love she pours into her career have had a profound impact on those around her.
“Someone once told me that they wish that there were more people like Mrs. Waters in the world and I couldn't agree more,” he said. “Mrs. Waters is always forgiving and understanding. She often deals with students in a way that lets them know it without her saying a word. Her actions show the kind, caring, and committed person she is. She never asks for a break or recognition but is always so deserving of both.”
