An elementary school is bursting with new colors and creativity with the help of students and a local artist.
Woodfin Elementary parent and artist Julie Armbruster put several months of work into the school's media center. Prior to adding paint to brush, Julie set forth to gather ideas of what the students wanted to see when they entered the space. At that point the idea to incorporate the school’s wolverine mascot was a no-brainer.
“The media center is now full of artwork designed by our current third and fourth graders,” said Principal Nicole Roberts. “Now you walk into a Woodfin Wolverine wonderland.”
Julie worked with the students over the course of several weeks on how to draw wolverines, and add a few special features to the furry animals. Students came up with ideas of the wolverine wearing a hat, reading a book, and even skateboarding. Asked why she wanted to take on this project, Julie said it was her love for the school. “When I toured the school with my daughter, we met in the library,” Julie explained. “I instantly loved the expansive, welcoming space, and it made me feel very hopeful and excited about our little community school. A volunteer at the school knew that I had done other murals in town and encouraged me to reach out and make an appointment with the librarian to discuss some ideas for the media center.”
Teachers at the school say this is something that everyone will enjoy for years to come.
“Seeing the media center full of color has really helped the media center to be a warm and welcoming environment,” said Media Center Coordinator Amy Lunsford. “I hope when these third and fourth graders are seniors, that they come back to visit and are excited to find their wolverine character on the wall.”
