Two students are riding in style this summer all thanks to a dedicated community partner.
The Kiwanis Club of Buncombe County sponsors a bike giveaway at Johnston Elementary. This year the winners were chosen based on their positive behavior. The school’s nurse also gave both students helmets to help promote safe bike riding. Principal Angela Trantham said this is a rewarding experience to be a part of.
“Throughout the school year students have the opportunity to earn individual tickets when they exhibit what we call BEARS, which stands for ‘B-Best Effort, E-Encourage Others, A-Act Responsibly, R-Respect, S-Safe at all time,’” Ms. Trantham explained. “The bikes added an additional layer that was an exciting surprise for everyone. Next school year we will be giving one bike away every quarter. It’s an emotional time for both staff and students, as we’ve witnessed students cry when they received their new bike.”
