The Arc of Buncombe County has presented Enka High’s Suzi Hoppes with the 2023 Exceptional Children (EC) Teacher of the Year award. The Arc, a nationwide disability advocacy organization, gives this award to the most exceptional teacher of exceptional children that our county has to offer. Hoppes was chosen to represent what makes EC teachers amazing. “I am honored that the work I love and do each day is valued and respected by my peers,” said Ms. Hoppes.
Ms. Hoppes was nominated anonymously saying “[Ms. Hoppes] has amazing skills in communicating with parents and creating an atmosphere of acceptance in her classroom. She advocates for her students and works tirelessly to ensure they are prepared for a life after high school. This teacher has formed great relationships with all high school Extended Content teachers across the district and helps to mentor those that are new to the position.”
EC teachers, says Ms. Hoppes, teach their students to gain independence, one goal at a time. “With EC, students can develop skills for success and independence they may not have otherwise had. These skills are what they need to be successful once they leave school.”
Congratulations to Ms. Hoppes!
