Nesbitt Discovery Academy (NDA) lived up to its name last Friday as students experimented, built, and observed a wide range of STEM and community service opportunities.
From deploying weather balloons to volunteering at a local nonprofit to learning about climate data from NOAA scientists, NDA students made the most of their STEM Day. The eclectic mix of programs provided every student with a chance to expand their horizons. One group sat down to hear a panel of NDA graduates who described their college and career experiences and provided life advice. Another learned about solar power from a local installer. Still another learned about mindfulness breathing practices.
“STEM Day allows us to explore and expand on STEM concepts beyond the standard curriculum,” said Mackenzie Sumer Robinson, NDA college math teacher. “It allows students to interact as a community with the local industry professionals, engage in service projects that hone soft skills, and see real-world connections. This time benefits our overall mission of providing students with innovative educational experiences that prepare them for college and careers in STEM-related disciplines.”
