FRC director, Shannon Boyd, smiles at EC Student

The Buncombe County Schools Family Resource Center (FRC), a community pantry, free clothing boutique, and resource center located at Enka Middle School and serving the entire BCS community, has had help from some exceptional talent.

EC Students carry out trash

For the second year in a row, students from Enka High’s Exceptional Children program have come to work every week as interns as part of the Extended Content Classroom, becoming part of the tapestry of support that holds up families in need while also learning life and vocational skills to take into the workforce. A party was held to celebrate the students who have given their time and warm energy to the program for half of their high school careers, creating a bittersweet moment for the FRC’s staff.

“They feel safe here, and they’re able to learn these skills in a one-on-one environment,” said FRC director Shannon Boyd. “It’s something they wouldn’t be able to get elsewhere. They’re a huge asset to our program. You know, we’re packing bags of food, putting away clothing, doing all kinds of things. Having them around takes a lot off our plates.”

In exchange for the year of taking out the trash, organizing clothing, and packing boxes of pantry staples, students received a certificate of appreciation for their hard work. They enjoyed a sundae bar, cupcake decorating, summer bingo and “pin the nose on the boss.” The event had a Hawaiian summer theme, complete with leis and bottles of Hawaiian punch.

“We call them our Tuesday blessings, because we have so much fun with them,” said Boyd. “They make us laugh and smile, and we just feel better even after they’ve left for the day.”
