Students showed off their sensational rhythm and moves last week at the Erwin High School Dance Showcase.
The event featured 25 students in this semester’s performance classes, and 13 dances that are a combination of teacher-taught and student choreographed. While Hurricane Helene caused students to have much less rehearsal time, they were determined to not miss a step.
“The thrill of being on stage under the lights drives these students to work so hard,” said teacher Kelli Hall. “Some of them have been dancing for a while, and their only opportunity to perform is at school, and some students are dancing for the first time ever.”
Ms. Hall says the Dance Showcase not only builds confidence in her students but also fosters their desire for lifelong learning.
“A lot of them come into class on the first day feeling very unsure and anxious,” she said. “By the day of the performance, they have fallen in love with dance and typically want to come back. It's very rewarding to help students find a passion they didn't even realize they had.”
Erwin High School hosts another Dance Showcase later this year. The performance is scheduled for May 28.
