At North Windy Ridge Intermediate, students in the Cooking Club aren’t just learning recipes - they’re discovering a passion for food, creativity, and hospitality. Led by Principal Doris Sellers, the club gives fifth and sixth graders hands-on experience in the kitchen, teaching them valuable skills they can use for a lifetime.

Held in the foods lab at North Buncombe Middle School, the club provides students with a real culinary workspace, complete with kitchen stations, cooking tools, and all the ingredients they need to bring their dishes to life. Under Principal Sellers’ guidance, students chop, mix, and saute their way through a variety of recipes.

“I love sharing my passion for cooking and entertaining with students,” Mrs. Sellers said. “Cooking is more than just making food - it’s about creativity, teamwork, and bringing people together.”

Each session introduces a new recipe and technique, teaching students about measurements, kitchen safety, and the importance of fresh ingredients. Beyond the cooking itself, the club emphasizes the joy of sharing a meal. Students set tables, plate their dishes beautifully, and learn how food can be an act of hospitality.

For many students, the Cooking Club is a highlight of their school experience. They not only gain confidence in the kitchen, but also develop life skills like patience, problem solving, and teamwork.

“It’s amazing to see their excitement when they taste something they made from scratch,” Mrs. Sellers said.

With each meeting the club continues to inspire young chefs, showing them that cooking isn’t  a chore - it’s an adventure.
