Seven BCS educators have been honored as District Teachers of the Year. The teachers, one from each district within the Buncombe County Schools system, were recognized at February’s Board of Education meeting.
The teachers, all named Teachers of the Year for their schools, submitted essays and videos of their teaching philosophy and how they use their classroom to help build a sense of belonging. They were selected to represent their entire district by the Teacher of the Year committee, made up of BCS teachers and representatives of the Buncombe County Schools Foundation.
This year’s honorees (pictured above, from left to right):
Carol Petusky, Enka Intermediate School - Enka District
Jacob Nester, Owen High School - Owen District
Darryl Fox, North Buncombe High School - North Buncombe District
Mary Brantley Wommack, Fairview Elementary - Reynolds District
Zane Weekman, Community High School - At-Large District
Calondra McCarter, Koontz Intermediate School - Roberson District
Tori King, Erwin Middle School - Erwin District
One of those seven teachers will be named the overall Buncombe County Schools Teacher of the Year at a special ceremony in April.
