At Charles D. Owen High School (OHS), basketball is more than just a game - it’s a family tradition. This season, the Warhorses are thriving under the leadership of a unique coaching duo: father and daughter Joe and Ashley Valencia. Both Owen graduates themselves, the Valencias have returned to their alma mater to guide the men's basketball team through its best season in years.

Coaching together has been a special experience for the pair, who not only share a love for the game but also bring a balance of experience and energy to the court.

“Getting to coach alongside my dad is a dream come true,” said Ashley. “All my life he coached me in several sports, and now I get to impart some of that same knowledge on these amazing athletes.”

The players have embraced the leadership of the father-daughter team, crediting the sense of family and strength.

“These teammates are like brothers to me, we are always hanging out at school and afterwards,” said junior Asante. “We really love each other, and it’s more than just basketball for us. It’s great seeing all the work we’ve put in has paid off.”

Beyond basketball, the Valencias also coach Owen’s softball team, proving their dedication to the school’s athletic programs. Their commitment extends beyond wins and  losses - they are focused on building a culture of hard work, discipline and comradery.

“When one kid is having a good game, everyone wants to get involved,” Joe said. “Everybody gets a chance to shine, grow, and get better. Basketball is more than just a sport, it’s a sense of belonging.”

With the Warhorses having their best season in decades, Joe and Ashley’s leadership is proving that basketball at Owen is not just about talent - it’s about heart, history, and family.
